Lecture 1 (Week 1 - 30/08/2017)
On the first day, Mr. Vinod introduced himself and asked us about what we understand along with our knowledge about typography. Mainly peers of mine said that typography is an art of text or a style and appearance of printed matter. He also told us about the "Text Edit" software in MacOS. We are ought to have our own blogspot to as a design blog/reflective journal. Mr.Vinod wanted us to capture and write all of the progress that have been done in the typography class as well as the lectures, feedback and reflections of the whole weeks. He also want us to read a book about typography and choose one particular part of the book that attracts us to be written on the blog. Also, Mr.Vinod reminded us to always put informations (date, week, name, student ID,project) on every single project that we do and label every post to distinguish them. To prove that we already did the assignments, he ought us to take picture or screencapture everything that we've done either it's on paper or computer and write a caption on every photo that we've taken as an evidence.
For the exercise, we need to buy a calligraphy pen (3.0mm pen is recommended), a calligraphy example (not a computer font), A4 graph papers, and also a folder to keep the hardcopy.
Lecture 2 (Week 2 - 06/09/2017)
Firstly he again explained about the meaning of typography which is a technique of arranging type to make written language legible, readable, and appealing when displayed and how typography has evolved for roughly 500years from Calligraphy to Lettering and lastly Typography. Typography is the source of logotype (spesific font design of a brand as an identity). Techniques that are used to learn typography isn't just by books or lectures. It can be from practice, observation or from seniors. Typography employs a number of terminologies, conventions and unwritten matters. It is also hard to correct a person when it comes to typography. It takes time and errand to know if it's correct or wrong. Mr Vinod also shared some typography artists such as Paul Rand, Freeman Lau, Suzana Lico, William Harold Wong, and more. It's also necessary to undertsand design including typography eventhough you're in marketing and business platform.
Typography is Art
Good Typography is Art
The source of word Font came from the word Found which is originated from the word Foundry (a place where metal is casted). And we're not supposed to use the word "font" but Type Face and Type Family.
Font = A particular size and kind of type
Eg. Arial Bold, Helvetica Italic
Type Family = Is a set of similar typefaces that have identical design characteristics.
Eg. Helvetica Light, Helvetica Condensed
Type Face = Particular design of type
Eg. Arial, Helvetica
Lecture 3 (Week 3 - 13/09/2017)
There was no lecture since the time is used to present the calligraphy artwork and creating the type expression with the animation.
Lecture 4 (Week 4 - 20/09/2017)
In this lecture we were introduced to the parts of letterform which resembles body parts and but much more complicated than we wouldn't even think and remember some of them. The term that would be us is typography lexicon which means history of typography discipline. Nevertheless, it's very crucial to know these parts in order to create a typeface.
Img.1 Anatomy of letterform |
Median : Imaginary line defining the X-Height of letterform
X-Height : The height in any typeface of lowercase
Ascender : Upper part for the lowercase letters such as b,d,h,k,l,etc.
Descender : Lower part for the lowercase letters such g,j,p,q,etc.
Img.1.2 Anatomy of letterform |
Img.1.3 Serif |
Sans Serif font : Gill sands, Helvetica, Calibri
Some of typography has their expert set for example, Georgia font.
Expert Set : An additional font designed to accompany a standard font, providing a range of characters not included in the standard character map.
Since there are a lot of things to explain, I'll only put the pictures that marks the parts of the letterform instead.
A good typography is when its type set well, you can read it without any interference.
For Italic fonts, somehow some typefaces calls it italic or oblique. Italic fonts mimic the actual handwriting which can make difference between the regular ones. Means like some how it looks like calligraphy especially for the serif font. There are significat differences when it goes italic. Not like oblique. Oblique fonts are just an angled version of the roman means that there are no significant differences. They just lean to the right side. Oblique is the developed version of italic. Roman letterforms cames from roman monuments and also they don't have lowercase.
Styles =
1.Boldface : Semibold, Medium, Black, Extrabold, Super
2.Light : Thin
3.Condensed : Compressed
4.Extended
What is the goal of typography ?
Easy readability and appropriate expression of contemporary aesthetics
Instructions
Exercise
Exercise 1 (Week 1) - Calligraphy
Requirements :
- A4 Green Graph Papers
- Calligraphy pen (3.0 mm)
- Clear binder portfolio
I used Artline Calligraphy pen (3.0mm) with a flat nib. At first I didn't feel like it's comfortable but after I tried the curved nib, I think that I'd be convenient if I use the flat nibbed calligraphy pen. My lines weren't very neat because it's quite hard for me to make a straight line and considering it's my first time creating calligraphy, my hands aren't steady and quite shaky so It's difficult for me to make it. Nevertheless, I don't feel like round hand is suitable for me since my actual handwriting is more similar to black letter. Furthermore, I realized that I'm a person who's more suitable with writing letters rather than making horizontal, veritcal or circular lines. That's why the letter A-Z and 3 lines passage result is slightly better. All we need to do is to create the calligraphy on the graph paper and also we have to scale it so each calligraphy matches the others (thus it won't look messy).
Img.1 Vertical lines' first attempt at first I didn't know that I supposed to make the line in 1 block |
Img.1.2 Vertical lines' second attempt |
Img.2 Horizontal line's first attempt Same mistakes with the vertical lines happened |
Img 2.2 Horizontal lines' second attempt |
- A4 Green Graph Papers
- Calligraphy pen (3.0 mm) - Clear binder portfolio |
Just like how I mentioned before, I chose black letter because it matches my handwriting more so It's not that hard to actually follow the writings. And also it's quite easy to make it since I already get used to the pen. Moreover, after some attempts of trying the black letter on my rough graph paper I think that the way I use my pen matches the blackletter so I didn't find it hard to follow eventhough I still need to improve with the straight lines. Same thing with the previous calligraphy horizontal, vertical and circular lines exercise, we need to scale it perfectly thus we'll have a decent spacing between alphabets. Not to mention that some alphabets have ascender and descender, hence we are intended to calculate the spaces.
Reference |
Img.1 Rough sketches to practice black letter |
Img.2 Letter A-L first attempt The mistake is that the alphabet is too big. I supposed to do it in one small box instead of 1 big box and also it needs to be done lanscaped |
Img.2.2 Letter M-X first attempt |
Img.2.3 Letter Y and Z
And as a result of the dullness of the nip because I used to press my calligraphy a lot, I changed to another calligraphy pen with the same size thus it would make it more neat and sharp. I again learned more about the technique of the blackletter that I'm doing in order to make it more neat and better.
Img.1 Second attempt A-I
Img.1.2 Second attempt J-R
Img.1.3 Second attempt S-Z
For the 3 lines passage I chose a quote from Jerzy Kosinski which is "The principles of true art is not to potray but to evoke". The lettering on the graph paper is more satisfying rather than the one on the A4 blank white paper considering it doesn't have the guidelines.

Exercise 3 (Week 3) - Type Expression
Requirements :
- Adobe Illustrator
- Adobe Photoshop
The assignment that we need to do is to draw out our name with any desired lettering we wanted to as long as it defines our personality or character. And also to make an animated GIF for the name lettering which again needs to have a connection with our character. We have to figure out how we would represent our identity into a animated lettering. Firstly, we need to create the design of the lettering with Adobe Illustrator. Don't forget to multiple the artboard so you could make different lettering on each artboard. If you think you're done, you could export it into JPEG/PNG (with white background). Import the files and load it into stacks to Adobe Photoshop and create the timeline in order to make the animation. Save for web and choose GIF as the format.
Since Mr.Vinod asked me to make another one if I have time for the name lettering, I used my other handlettering with different personality.
The steps would be the same as I've stated previously.
The sketches 1. Contrast 2. To always moving forward 3. Bold personality 4. Messy personality |
First attempt of lettering animation
Img.1 A lettering without any complicated designs defines myself who doesn't like things convoluted. I fancy simplicity but not tawdry indeed |
Img.1.2 This exemplify the artistic part of me personally. The uneven triangles inside each alphabet shows how I don't like to be stuck with one rule for my art. If anything that I made looks the same, then it's not my best piece. |
Img.1.3 The movements that happened between alphabets explains how I like to try things in different ways and not folllowing how it meant to be in order to feel different experience. The lines that tries to connect the alphabets one by one demonstrate how the diversity of my personalities will always attached and formed into how I am now. |
Img.1.The duplicated lettering of the simple lettering and the one that has design in it illustrated how both of my personalities become one even though there's a contrast between them.
Img.2 Thumbnails

Img 3 Making the lettering with Illustrator using multiple artboards |
Img 3.2 Moving on to the Adobe Photoshop to create the GIF |
Final Result The lettering defines me as a person who always moving forward and accept the past as a lesson thus the lettering is leaning to the right which symbolize the future and the pattern on the lettering is the motion of going forward |
Img.4 Thumbnails |
Exercise 4 (Week 4) - Six Verbs Type Expression
We are told to compose and express 6 words with illustrator and animate it with photoshop. And also we were given typefaces to work with. We have to choose which kind of typefaces that would match each word in order to visualize it. The steps would be the same as previous exercise. The words were Jumbo, Noisy, Crooked, Hollow, Deep, and Dig.
Thus, the words are fine but I need to change the word Jumbo (it doesn't visualize jumbo), Crooked (It's not on a straight line and messy), and Dig (it doesn't visualize dig). Thus I made another one with some changes with the font.
Feedback
Week 1
General Feedback: We need to make a design blog from blogger which is crucial and also do the horizontal lines, vertical lines and circular lines for week 2. We need to find reference about typography in a book which is reccomended. He insisted us to buy a calligraphy pen which is 3.0 and graph paper sheets to write it and choose the kind of calligraphy that suits me and also not a computer font. Thus i chose black letter.
Spesific Feedback: Mr. Vinod said that i chose the correct calligraphy style
Week 2
Spesific Feedback : Since I already made the calligraphy for A-Z in a wrong way (I made it potrait instead of landscape), Mr.Vinod said I just need to continue it and he said that I need to minimize the size of calligraphy to make it have more space and organized. Moreover, my black letter is quite good just need to make a final paper if i have time.
General Feedback : We need to have our own hand angle and always update the progress of our own design blog
Week 3
General Feedback: Firstly Mr.Vinod evaluate our calligraphy results and mostly the problem is about how the spacing between lines. We also need to know that some people have different type when working and doing things like calligraphy that's why the results of us may vary and it's normal. We also need to manage our time because it takes a lot of time and effort to make the calligraphy. And also, even we're not satisfied with the result, we still need to move on because we need to submit at the deadline thus there will be no time to do the same thing over and over again.
Spesific Feedback : For the calligraphy, Mr.Vinod said that the result of mine is quite fine and also the changes in progress from the horizontal lines until the 3 line passage is quite significant. However, the 3 line passage on the white A4 paper that I made isn't good enough (the one in the graph paper is more better) as I didn't really scale it perfectly and it's quite messy. Likewise, Mr.Vinod suggest me to try the 3 line passage again on the A4 paper and as well to trace it based on the calligraphy in graph paper to make it similar. In the lettering class, I've already made the GIF for my lettering and showed Mr.Vinod the result. He said that my lettering does represent how my personality is. Yet the animation for my lettering didn't match the personality that I have explained to Mr.Vinod so I'll figure out how it would express the indentity of myself.
Week 4
General Feedback: We supposed to do any lettering assignments in Adobe Illustrator because we are workin with vectors, not photos so it's not suitable to use Adobe Photoshop. We are supposed to use 10 fonts that has given by Mr.Vinod in order to make the lettering of the 6 different words. Assuming that we use the other fonts that we think is more suitable, we'll be more focused on choosing the fonts instead of trying to visualize the words which is the actual point of doing the artwork. This is why Mr.Vinod want us to not use any colour or fonts other than what he have asked for. And for the e-portfolio (the blog), we are not supposed to have a theme for the blog that is too flamboyant because it would be hard to see as it doesn't look clean and neat. We are intended to know what kind of fonts that we are using.
Spesific Feedback : For my name is still need to work it out because I need to focus on one exact personality so it doesn't have two meaning in it. If I got time I can edit it again so it would be more perfect and describe a certain identity. For the 6 words, I'm doing fine and I chose the correct fonts as what we supposed to do. However I need to work with the word "Jumbo", "Crooked", and "Dig" because It doesn't really show the meaning. Mr.Vinod and Mr.Shamsul also helped me a lot by helping me to adjust the spaces with ruler so it would look neat and gave some ideas about what kind of font that I should use. After several times doing it finally Mr.Shamsul said that I could choose any one of my type expression to animate it.
Week 5
General Feedback : We are intended to always learn from the previous result, get some findings from your trial and error thus at the end it will make your final result even better. And no matter what always put your previous and latest artwork to see the difference with it whether it's hardcopy or e-portfolio. Try to see the other works for more references and inspirations. There's no point of doing the same things over and over again as the result of not looking at each other works. The next exercise would be making the type expression for lines in storybook and we need to know exactly about the align and size. For the e-portfolio, it's crucial to always document the progress by photos with good lighting and no shadows or any interferences. This will affect the score that we will get. The labels for e-portfolio needs to have the same name as the module means that we just need to have 4 labels. You need to look carefully on the meaning and the intonation of the story book assignments. We are not supposed to just write everything down without knowing it
Spesific Feedback : The second attempt of the animation is way much better than the first one. It defines exactly of my personality rather than the one before. Meaning that I actually learned from my past result. The progress of the 6 words is slightly significant but still better. My Jumbo is not bold enough and the Deep animation needs to be more smoothers since it’s kind of stiff while the motion falling down. The e-portfolio is fine. Nevertheless, the arrangement is not correct. It is supposed to be Lectures/Tutorials - Instructions - Exercise - Feedback - Reflection - Book of the week. For the hardcopy of the thumbnails, the outline should be 5pt.
Reflection
1. Experience
Week 1 : The first class started and it seems hard since there are a lot of work to do in the future but at the same time i'm very excited.
Week 2 : I enjoyed the calligraphy assignments, however the result at the end will always dissapoint me and made me ended up doing the same things over and over again.
Week 3 : I've presented my result and knowing there are some mistakes that I have to fix. Type expression is way more difficult than the calligraphy since it takes our own idea while doing it which makes me even more devastated while doing the work. But still, I managed my time to do it.
Week 4 : I got many mistakes while doing the type expression especially on my animation. I tried to do as best as I could eventhough I can't feel more confident about it. The type expression for 6 words was much better than expected rather than the name one.
Week 5 : I've learned more about how to express word and knew how I should make my result. There might some mistakes but it's way better than before.
2. Observation
Week 1: When we don't use a spesific kind of pen that matches us for calligraphy, we will end up not doing our best. That's why we need to find the perfect nib for our calligraphy pen.
Week 2: To find a certain handlettering style would be very tricky. We need to find the exact lettering that would match our hand and also the pen.
Week 3: To make the type expression with a software is a whole another level. The result might differ of what we sketched and what the result will end up.
Week 4: Ideas, thinking outside the box and creativity is necessary while making the type expression.
Week 5: The animation of the type expression should be smoother so it would look good.
3. Findings
Week 1: A pen will always affect the result of calligraphy. Either its nib or the size. We all use our hands differently.
Week 2: Before we try to do handlettering with uppercase letters, it's the best thing to do if we practice lowercase letters first.
Week 3: It's crucial to be careful while exporting and importing files for the type expression since a single wrong steps could affect all of them and ended up not finishing the assignment.
Week 4: Playing with the spaces is what all the design students need to do. This will result of a good unexpected artwork.
Week 5 : The more artboards of the type expression that we made the more smoother it will be.
Books of The Week
Week 1 & 2
Heller, S. & Meggs, P. B., 2001, Texts on Type: Critical Writings on Typography, Allworth Press, Allworth Communications, New York.
I chose this book as it is one of the books that are recommended in the module references. This book shows the impact of typography in critical writings. Not to mentions the history and techniques that was made in order to express certain topics with typography. And by that, I am interested and i guess this book is worth to read.
It explains on how moreover if there is a certain design to express disgracefulness and vile emotion. Not to mention of how a "hate" can be well designed since we usually appraise art with positiveness. One of the person who made this hate designs is Adolf Hitler. He could engrave hate into millions of minds. To make it easier to understand, you could see the Swastika symbol which is made by Hitler and still remains be one of the trademark of malevolence (evil/indignity)
Week 3
Burgess, Paul, 2012, Design:Type, Rockport Publishers, Quayside Publishing Group, United States of America.
This particular book features a curated collection of nearly 600 exquisite designs, along with essays from designers about the essence of creating compelling, communicative designs using typography in myriad ways. It consists a series that would be inspiring for practicing design in typography platform.
It's a piece by Magma Brand Design from Germany for Slanted Magazine. The cover looks simple but consist a good typography with contemporary style on it that makes such a unique quality and making it a collector's piece. The typography tells a whole different story that makes it more important than the content itself. It's also eye catching that you would buy for the aesthetic instead of
what inside it. A good part of marketing indeed.
Week 4
Spiekermann, E., 2002, Stop Stealing Sheep and Find Out How Type Works, Adobe Press.
This is a book where designers could gain inspiration while choosing a typeface.
The flute makes light, delicates sounds; at the other end of the musical spectrum is the tuba with its undeniably substantial sound. Just like them, typography works the same. We don't play tuba at full volume and never will work with small chamber ensemble. There are limits to use blod typefaces. The best thing for bold faces is to use them where you need to accentuate ryhthm and lend emphasis to the other instruments and voices. Also as the thickness of the stems increases, weight is added to the outsides of the letters, making the bolder weights wider than the lighter ones. However, there's no system that would name weights in a family.

Jumbo : Serifa Noisy : Janson Crooked : Garamond Hollow : Univers Deep : Futura Dig : Caslon |
Img 4.2 2nd Attempt. I changed the Dig's font into Gill Sans and Mr Shamsul wanted me to change the Noisy to be in shades of grey also to make a one big Noisy that would pop out in the words of noisy and changed the Hollow's "O" more contrast |
Img.4.3 The designs are confirmed by the lecturers thus this is the final result for 6 words. And I chose Deep as the one that I wanted to animate |
Final Lettering Animation The motion moves as if it's going down to the surface just like a deep sea |

The racist policies were interpreted aesthetically in architectural, environmental and graphic design.Since then, If a graphic designer were intended to design hate, Nazi-influenced visualitation would necessarily be used. One of the letterform that is used for hate is German Fraktur type. The typeface will make the words frightening. Even the most harmless words and phrases will have ominous look with it.
Img.4 German Fraktur type |
In this case, graphic design and typography may take role in the systematic racist propaganda. It might looks odd how this small details could make a big difference in controlling minds. Hate is perhaps most effective when designed according to middlebrow standard. I've mentioned one of the instance while there are much more designs that could spread vile emotions. The design of hate have to be painfully obvious and it shouldn't be misinterpreted.
