Lecture Notes

Editorial illustration is typically a type of work that has a deep history in political satire, especially though extends beyond the world of politics. Newspapers and magazines print illustrations alongside their articles to illuminate some element of the concepts for the reader. For this assignment, you must find a related article/story that discuss Urban Legends. The legends maybe local or international.

There are 3 Part Act which consist The beginning, Middle and Ending.

Img.1 3 Part Act
The beginning (The Setup) is the first turning point.
At the beginning of a narrative, the “exposition is the author providing some background information to the audience about the plot, charactershistories, setting and theme.

The Middle (The Confrontation) is the second turning point. Which is the "rising action", typically depicts the characters attempt to resolve the problem. Most of the time to find themselves even worst off. Some cases because they don't have the skill to deal with the problem. This leads to character development.

The Ending (The Resolution) is the third turning point. It's the scene or sequence in which the main tensions of the story are brought to their most intense point. The dramatic question answered, leaving the character with a new sense of who they really are after the conflict has been resolved.

Tutorial

Before we start the project, we need to exercise again our ability to trace with Adobe Illustrator. It's the same as the pear exercise before in vormator elements. The goal is to create a illustration based on the real picture. And we also need to trace the shadows just like the reference picture. This exercise is a Chiaroscuro Exercise.

Sir Hafiz also mentioned about how grain effect would be a better choice to make an art deco (giving it a vintage effect).

Exercise

The first step is to make a mindmap based on the urban legend that we have found. This mindmap is crucial that it's supposed to make everything more organized and will make more ideas pop out. We are supposed to show the "Decisive Moment" which is the turning point (climax) of the narrative.

My Urban Legend :

Kuchisake-Onna (Slit-Mouthed Woman)

As the story goes, a beautiful woman named Kuchisake was married to a man who suspected her of being unfaithful - and he was right. Kuchisake had fallen for another man, and was planning to leave her husband. Flying into a jealous rage, her husband knocked Kuchisake unconscious and tied her up. When she woke, he threatened to kill her if she left him, and used a large pair of scissors to slice her face into a permanent smile.

Img.1.2 References
If we're done with the mindmap and artboards, we need to create the sketch for the art deco. The sketch doesn't need to be in art deco.

Img.1.3 First Sketch
Before the actual sketch I supposed to divide it using rule of thirds thus Sir Hafiz made it for me as a reference.

Img.1.7 Final result

After showing the final result, Sir Hafiz said that it doesn't really show foreground, midground and background. After showing some art deco references, Sir hafiz create a simple sketch for me.

Thus I ended up using the sketch as my reference for the new art deco illustration. I found some pictures as my artdeco reference (also for the colour palette).

Reflection
I found that a lot of research actually helps a lot and would make me discover more ideas.
